The clay brick you can build on
our storyabout apollo brick
Our Journey is Built on Trust
Apollo Brick Gauteng purchased Eagle Brick and Tile from Gys van Rooyen in 1995. This acquisition, driven by Melt Malan, David Wertheim-Aymes, Fritz Vorster and Jan Vorster were led and guided by John Vorster. Melt Malan and David Wertheim-Aymes later left to pursue their own business ventures.
The founders were drawn to brickmaking for its simplicity and longevity. Clay is a natural material, shaped into a product built to endure, the kind of material a home can be built on and trusted to protect the people inside it. That belief has remained at the heart of the business, and it’s part of why “the clay brick you can build on” is more than a line, it’s what the company set out to create from the start.
The principles John Vorster brought to the business, integrity, honesty, fairness, and a genuine contribution to the country, continue to guide how Apollo Brick operates today.
Apollo Brick was consolidated under Western Investment Company, a family-owned group with interests spanning industrial minerals, tourism and farming. The move into brick manufacturing coincided with South Africa’s Reconstruction and Development Programme at a time when significant, sustained growth in construction was anticipated, and Apollo Brick was built to be part of it.
In 1999, the business expanded into the Western Cape with the establishment of Apollo Brick Cape, south of Atlantis. Over the years the group also operated factories in Nigel, Malmesbury and Durbanville. Following the downturn in construction after 2008, the Malmesbury and Durbanville and Nigel plants closed.
Today, Apollo Brick’s operations are centred on Olifantsfontein in Gauteng and Atlantis in the Western Cape. More than three decades after its founding, the business remains family-owned, and continues to build on the same principles of quality, reliability and integrity that shaped it from the start.
aboutmanufacturing
Two Plants
Two Methods
In the Western Cape, bricks are also dried in drying lines before being fired in Parish Clamps, a method developed with Bill Parish specifically to suit the characteristics of Cape clay. The system fires more consistently and produces less smoke, an early, practical step toward the kind of environmental responsibility now reflected in our Global GreenTag certification.
Across both operations, the objective has always been the same: consistent quality, regardless of which plant a brick comes from. Weather has a direct effect on production capacity, and we continue to invest in technology and process improvements to strengthen consistency and supply as the business grows.
